What causes Autism?

The exact cause of autism has not been identified, however some studies have identified advanced maternal and/or paternal age as contributing factor, others are genetic makeup and in most cases are unwarranted.

But studies are showing that a child’s environment and genetic makeup may contribute to the condition. Parents should focus on the child’s strengths while helping to address any specific challenges. Some children with autism excel on highly intellectual levels, yet lack social skills, while others suffer in all areas.

Other factors of Autism

There are other comorbidities that are associated with Autism such as difficulty sleeping, gastrointestinal problems, attention disorders, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorders and other behavioral issues.

Treatment plans for Autism Spectrum Disorder

Each child with Autism is unique and therefore treatment plans are individualized depending on their needs. Research has shown that early intervention leads to further advancement and more positive future outcomes. The main treatment for patients on the Autism Spectrum is to divulge them in as much therapy as possible, the main one being Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy which is an intensive therapy that works on social communication skills as well as addressing social behaviors. Other types of treatment options include speech, occupational, physical, feeding, sensory-integration, music and equine therapy.
